🎨 How to color it

Color the schoolhouse siding barn red, the bell tower warm cream, the stone path soft gray, and the maple leaves in gold, rust, and cranberry. Use sharp colored pencils for the narrow window panes, roof trim, and clapboard lines, then switch to broader strokes for the open lawn and sky. Try making the leaves closest to the path extra bright, as if the bell has shaken loose a little autumn light.

Every morning before school, Nessa counted the stones in the curving path so she would not have to think about the bell rope waiting inside. Thirty-one stones, three steps, one breath. The old bell smelled of rain and metal, and its clang always seemed big enough to knock the words out of her mouth.

Until one morning, a fox stepped from under the fence and sat on the path as if it were a small red question. Because of that, Nessa stopped counting. Because of that, she heard what the yard had been saying all along: dry leaves skittering like paper boats, branches ticking softly, the bell tower humming in the wind. The fox looked up. “Do you hear it too?” Nessa whispered.

At the door, she took the rope with both hands and pulled once. The bell did not shout; it rolled over the roof and through the trees like warm thunder. The fox vanished between the leaves, but Nessa walked in with her first word ready. If you follow the stones with your eyes, can you find where her counting turned into one breath?
