Every morning, Kira snapped her water bottle beside her backpack, checked the clock’s thin tick-tick, and hurried past the long row of lockers toward the science wing. She wanted to be the first student helper to unlock the terrarium room, where warm lamps smelled like dust and leaves. Until one day, her locker door swung too wide, bumped the tiny side shelf, and the shelf clicked open where nobody ever looked.
Because of that, a rolled strip of blue paper slid out, tied with a shoelace. Because of that, Kira followed its arrows past the humming lockers, under the stairwell’s chilly shadow, and to a blank wall near room 112. “This is not blank,” she whispered, pressing the spot marked with a star. The wall panel popped, and behind it waited the missing terrarium key, a hall map, and six old badges reading GUIDE CREW.
Until finally, Kira reached the science wing with three other lost new kids racing after her, all laughing like sneakers on polished tile. The teacher pinned a badge to Kira’s jacket and handed her the key. Next time a locker shelf sits quiet and square, check its edges—maybe it is only waiting for your own tick-tick morning.
