🎨 How to color it

Try a teal calculator body, sunny yellow number keys, a cherry-red plus key, and alternating sky blue and lime counting cubes. Use sharp colored pencils for the tiny ruler tick marks and calculator symbols, then switch to smoother marker fills on the large calculator panels. Add a soft gray shadow under the tilted calculator so the stacked cubes look like they are sneaking across a real desk.

Every morning before math, Dax set himself one tiny challenge: solve the first problem without touching the calculator. He lined up cubes, checked the ruler, and kept his fingers away from the shiny keys, even when they clicked softly from someone’s elbow. The supply table smelled like pencil wood and rubber erasers.

Then one day the problem was 25 + 13, and the cubes began misbehaving. A tower leaned. Two singles rolled behind the ruler. Because of that, Dax had to wait, count again, and breathe through his nose while the class hamster squeaked in its cage. Because of THAT, he noticed the towers were built in tens, not just wobbly piles. “Hold still, you little bricks,” he whispered.

At last Dax slid the ruler like a fence, parked the runaway cubes, and counted three tens plus eight ones. He pressed the calculator only after he had 38 in his head. It beeped yes. Next time you spot the ruler fence and those sneaky cube towers, see if Dax’s patient answer is still hiding there.
