🎨 How to color it

Color the school bus classic golden yellow, the bus stop sign bright red and white, the big tree in maple orange, and the children’s backpacks in blue, purple, and green. Use sharp colored pencils for the narrow bus windows, leaf veins, and house details, then switch to broader strokes for the sidewalk and bus side. Try giving each falling leaf a slightly different autumn shade so the air feels like it is rustling around the waiting kids.

The story behind this coloring page

Why Bus Stops Keep Signs — Under the maple tree, Oren kept one hand around the tiny brass key in his pocket and the other on his backpack strap. Read the full story →

Under the maple tree, Oren kept one hand around the tiny brass key in his pocket and the other on his backpack strap. He wanted to step onto the first school bus with everyone else, but the key felt warm, as if it had been sitting in a patch of sun. The bus sighed to the curb, brakes hissing, and leaves scratched softly along the sidewalk.

The driver smiled. “All aboard.” Then the bus stop sign gave one small clink. Oren noticed a keyhole no bigger than a pea hidden under the word STOP. His grandmother had said the key was only for “the place that knows your name,” which sounded like a riddle and smelled, somehow, like old pennies and rain.

Oren turned the key. The sign shivered, and every falling leaf paused in the air like it was listening. Then the sign planted itself deeper in the ground, bright and steady, so every bus would know exactly where every waiting child belonged. Ever since, bus stops keep signs beside them, and if you spot the maple leaves whirling by this one, maybe you can find the tiny place that knows Oren’s name.
