🎨 How to color it

Layer the backpack in teal and coral, make the open books warm cream, the apples ruby red, the ruler honey yellow, and the crayon deep violet. Use sharp pencils and color one tiny zentangle section at a time, saving the thick backpack straps and pocket outlines for smooth, steady fills. Add a mischievous twist by hiding one gold star inside the paisley pocket pattern and giving the light bulbs a pale lemon glow.

In the supply alcove, the air smelled like pencil shavings and wax wrappers, and Elian kept his hand on the backpack zipper as if it might gallop away. First morning, first hallway, first chance to ask for the classroom map; he practiced the words silently while the patterned pocket pressed little ridges against his thumb.

He opened the front pocket only enough to peek. Pens clicked softly inside. A folded ruler leaned like a tiny bridge. Nothing answered, so he tucked in his schedule, then noticed a curl of paper hiding under the seam where nobody ever looks, behind the stiff flap that always pretends to be just decoration.

The curl unfolded into a note written in purple crayon: IF YOU FOUND THIS, YOU ARE OFFICIALLY BRAVE ENOUGH TO ASK WHERE ROOM 214 IS. ALSO, YOUR BACKPACK HAS BEEN KEEPING A STRAIGHT FACE ALL MORNING. Elian laughed once, too loudly for an alcove, and a passing teacher smiled. “Room 214?” he asked, before his courage could change its mind.

She pointed down the hall, where the floor shone like watered ink. Elian zipped the pocket with a neat little zzzt, and the backpack sat politely on his shoulders, still wearing every swirl and leaf as if it knew nothing at all about the pocket that winked.
