Under a hushy hedge, Hattie the hummingbird tapped her beak on a twig: “H-h-h.” She wanted one soft H-sound to finish her bedtime song, but the hedge only gave scratchy leaf whispers. So she zipped out toward the hill house, where warm chimney smoke smelled like toast and the path felt cool after rain.
Halfway there, a tiny snail with a roof-shaped shell blocked the walk. “Please wait,” he said, sliding very slowly. Hattie’s wings buzzed, but she folded them and listened. Slip… hush… slip… hush. The snail’s trail made the sound she needed. Hattie hummed it all the way back to her hedge, softer than smoke and sweeter than toast. Next time you see the big H by the little house, can you hear Hattie’s patient “hush” coming home?
