Under the cloud observatory, Elara polished the small heart she carried until it smelled faintly of peppermint wax. She wanted to know why every angel ornament wore an empty little spot near the hem, shaped just right for a secret. The elder ornaments only smiled and said, “Some answers arrive after bedtime.” That made Elara more curious, not less, so she followed a silver tapping sound past the star jars and over the soft, cottony edge of the cloud.
There, a crescent moon no bigger than a cookie was caught on a loose thread of night. It shivered with a thin chime, bright on one side and shadowy on the other. “I keep losing the way back,” whispered the crescent. Elara held out her heart, and its warm pink light showed a path between six sleepy stars. The crescent slipped free, but instead of flying away, it tucked itself onto the empty place near Elara’s robe.
From that night on, angel ornaments kept a moon at their hem so any wandering glow could find home by heartlight. If you visit Elara’s cloud, count the stars around her and see which little moon remembers the first silver tapping.
