Behind the tall coats, where wool smelled like snow and peppermint, Rue whispered the rules of her new game: collect one kind word from every corner before the first doorbell. She already had “warm,” but warm felt too easy. Anyone could say warm. Rue wanted the word that made a house open its arms.
So she slipped from her safe hook and rolled along the entry table, past prickly pine clippings and a bell that muttered clink-clink. At the umbrella stand, she traded one red berry for “dry.” Under the mail slot, a draft stole two needles before giving her “inside.” Near the boot tray, a puddle chilled her ribbon, but the boots told her “home.”
When Rue climbed back, lighter by a berry and two needles, the doorbell rang. A child stamped in, sniffed pine, and read the curved banner aloud. “Warm holiday welcome.” Rue held still, but between us, she knew the secret score: warm, inside, home. If you spot the tiny berries on her wreath, you can tell which word she paid for first.
