Every evening in October, Quibble floated between porch rails, tapping pumpkins to hear their hollow thunk and saving the seeds in a teacup. He wanted two trick-or-treat buckets made by his own hands, but hands were tricky when you were mostly breeze. Glue dripped through him. Ribbon tied itself to the doorknob. “Hold still, you silly handle!” he squeaked, while the corn leaves hissed like they were laughing.
Until one windy night, his witch hat flipped upside down and clonked against the step. Out tumbled a secret pocket nobody had thought to check, stuffed with curled wire, paper teeth, and tiny triangles of orange felt. Because of that, Quibble bent the wire into handles. Because of THAT, he stitched felt grins onto two little pumpkin pails, pricking nothing but moonlight.
At last, he marched to the door with both buckets swinging and his chest puffed round as a jack-o’-lantern. The wreath ghosts wobbled in applause. Next time you spot those pumpkin pails, see if you can guess which crooked grin Quibble sewed first from his teacup of saved-up seeds.
