Every night, when the iron gate cooled and the crickets clicked like tiny clocks, Vesper counted the moonstones of Briarbell Cemetery. One for the cross by the wall, two for the curled vine slab, three for the little marker near the path—his challenge was to reach every stone before the moon cleared the tallest branches.
Until one night, he counted one more pale shape than the cemetery owned. Because of that, Vesper drifted backward along the silver path, checking each name while damp grass brushed his smoky tail. Because of THAT, the extra shape slid too, not a stone at all, but a piece of moonlight caught on the old gate’s spear.
Vesper hovered, wonder prickling through him like starlight. “So you wanted to be counted,” he whispered, and tapped the glow free. It floated up among the stars, and Vesper began again with the first cool stone by the wall—can you find the gate where his runaway moonstone waited?
