🎨 How to color it

Color the palm fronds emerald and lime green, the ringed trunk warm tan, the little rocks soft gray, and the surrounding waves turquoise blue. Use sharp colored pencils for the narrow leaf sections and trunk bands, then switch to smooth side-strokes for the long, rolling water lines. Try a sunset twist by shading the clouds peach and lavender while keeping the tiny island bright golden sand.

At the quiet edge of the open lagoon, Marlo pressed a smooth shell into wet sand and made up a game called Follow the Smallest Ripple. He wanted to find where the water’s whisper began. The palm above him clicked its leaves in the warm breeze, hush-tick, hush-tick, while blue crabs hid under cool gray stones.

Marlo tapped the shell once. A little ring ran outward, touched a root, and came back. He tapped twice. Two rings slipped around the island, gentle as bracelets, and the sand stopped crumbling at the palm’s toes. “Stay,” Marlo whispered, and tapped a slow circle all the way around.

The lagoon listened. Every wave after that curled before it reached the palm, tracing soft rings instead of stealing sand. Ever since, tiny palm islands wear circles of water, and if you count the rings around this one, you may hear Marlo’s shell begin again at the quiet edge of the open lagoon.
