Each evening, when the sky turned blueberry gray, Arlo leaned toward the frozen pond to hear the little bell under the ice. Ting, ting, it sang through the cold, and Arlo kept the sound tucked behind his coal smile. He wanted one quiet note before the stars came out.
Until one day, the bell did not ring. Instead, a silver snow-cricket hopped onto Arlo’s carrot nose, its feet making the tiniest tickle. “My song is too small alone,” it whispered. Because of that, Arlo winked at the reeds, and the reeds shook with shh-shh music. Because of that, the moonlit ice hummed, the snow-cricket chirped, and faraway sleds stopped to listen. At last Arlo let the joy out in a wide coal grin, and next time you see his wink, you may hear that blueberry-gray bell too.
