Beyond the lantern posts, the winter garden made a thin glass music when the wind moved through the frozen reeds. Orin wanted the missing note, the one that should have rung from the empty place above his hat, so he rolled out from his packed, familiar hollow and followed a trail of blue sparks across the crusted snow. Each turn left a little of his roundness behind; the cold scraped softly, like paper against paper.
At the last dark yew, a white moth unfolded from the bark, its wings dusted with frost. “You’re not missing a note,” it whispered. “You’re standing outside the circle that hears it.” The moth touched his brim, and every snowflake in the garden answered at once—small bells, far stars, breath held in silver. Orin rolled home lighter, carrying no spark at all, only the hush that fit exactly around him: beyond the lantern posts, the winter garden made a thin glass music.
