Every night, Orin polished the round glass until it squeaked, then counted three snowflakes before he let the globe go still. He had made himself a challenge: no bedtime snowfall unless he could do it without waking the nursery mouse. The shelf smelled like dust and peppermint ribbon, and the room hummed, hush-hush.
Until one night, the cottage chimney inside the globe gave a tiny cough. Because of that, Orin tipped the globe just a little, and the snow slid onto the roof with a soft shff. Because of THAT, the chimney puffed warm silver smoke, and the sleeping child smiled without opening an eye. “One more,” Orin whispered, and shook the smallest storm he could. No one clapped. No one saw. But next time you spot Santa’s mitten raised beside the cottage, listen for the globe going hush-hush.
