🎨 How to color it

Color the three chicks butter yellow, the woven nest honey brown, the striped worm peach and coral, and the overhead leaves fresh green. Use chunky crayons or broad markers for the round bodies and big leaves, then let a grown-up help with the tiny toes and worm stripes if needed. Try making each chick’s cheek a different soft color—pink, apricot, and pale rose—so their little singing faces feel like a trio.

Under the warm leaf-roof, Pippa tapped one tiny toe. She had invented Nest-Near: bring back one sound that felt like home. “I’ll find the softest one,” she peeped, and hopped past the twig rim. The branch felt scratchy under her feet. A berry dropped—plip! A leaf brushed—shhh. Then a striped worm wriggled by with a tickly scritch-scritch, and Pippa’s downy chest fluttered.

She hurried back, but one small feather stayed caught on a twig. Pippa tugged, tugged, then left it there like a little flag. Her nestmates leaned close, smelling of sun-warmed fluff. Together they sang plip, shhh, scritch-scritch, peep, and the nest seemed to hum around them. Pippa had gone looking for one home-sound; she came back to three voices making room for hers. Next time you see the worm below the chicks, can you hear Pippa’s Nest-Near song beginning again?
