Every night in December, Quill tapped the doorbells of Frostline Row and wrote down their sounds: ding, dong, chime, clack. He wanted the perfect map so Santa would know which houses could wake a baby, a dog, or a cranky old parrot. The air smelled like cold cedar, and snow squeaked under his boots—until one doorbell did not ring at all. Instead, the doorstep whispered, “Wrong way.”
Because of that, Quill crouched beside the welcome mat and heard a tiny clatter beneath it. Because of that, the porch railings slid like puzzle bars, the lantern blinked twice, and Santa’s gift sack bumped the doorframe with a jolly oof. Quill chased the whisper around the posts, past the snowy little trees, curiosity pulling him faster than fear. At last, he found a loose brass bell hidden under the mat and tied it to the smallest present in Santa’s hand.
When Santa stepped forward, the bell gave one bright tinkle, and the door swung wide as if it had been waiting all year. Quill added a new mark to his map: answers only if asked kindly. Next time you see the wreath above that open door, can you spot where the wrong-way whisper began?
