🎨 How to color it

Color Santa’s suit classic red, his fluffy trim snowy white, the light bulbs alternating golden yellow, ruby red, and pine green, and the gift boxes icy blue and candy pink. Use sharp colored pencils for the many small bulbs and cord crossings, saving broader marker strokes for Santa’s coat, pants, and boots. Try a soft glow around each bulb—yellow halos near his beard and cooler blue glimmers down by the presents.

Under the eaves of the ornament storeroom, Bram hooked one end of a light string to his mitten and invented Tanglelight: cross the room without letting a single bulb tap the floor. The glass balls smelled faintly of cinnamon crates, and the cords whispered zip-zip over his sleeves. Each careful step made a new loop, then another, until warm bulbs circled his hat, belt, boots, and both raised hands.

“Hold still,” said Bram to the lights, as if they were kittens with sparks inside. He turned slowly between stacked gift boxes and hanging silver bells. The storeroom grew quiet except for the soft hum at his collar. Then the bulbs blinked—not randomly, but in little paths: three golds up his arm, two greens across his coat, one red beside the door.

From the high shelf, a tiny glass owl opened its painted eyes. “You made a welcome map,” it said. Every loop pointed toward an empty hook waiting for the last ornament, the one shaped like Bram’s own boot buckle. He hung it there, exactly where the lights had led him, and the whole room shone as if it had been saving his place. Next time you spot the loops around his boots and hat, can you trace the path that says: you belong here?
