🎨 How to color it

Color the tree branches pine green, the striped scarf cranberry red and cream, the holly leaves deep emerald, and the two gift bows shiny gold. Use sharp colored pencils for the ornament circles, scarf stripes, and tiny tassels, then switch to broader strokes on the tree body and gift boxes. Try making the top star bright yellow and the side star pale blue so the little tree looks lit from two directions.

Under the peppermint smell of lantern alley, Kiko tucked two square parcels beneath their lowest branches and wiggled their little feet. Their challenge was simple: leave both gifts before the clock tower rang twelve, without asking anyone for a cheer. Bells jingled from rooftops, snow hissed under passing sleds, and Kiko zipped past shuttered sweet shops with scarf tassels bouncing.

At the bakery door, Kiko set down the first box for whoever swept flour from the steps before sunrise. At the bridge, they placed the second beside a mitten basket for the person who dried strangers’ gloves. “Quick, quick, no claps!” Kiko whispered, grinning so hard their ornaments bobbed.

Then the wind flipped a scrap of paper from the second bow. It was a tiny list—not of children, but of night helpers: Sweep, Mend, Warm, Sing. Kiko looked around and saw more unsigned parcels tucked under benches, behind lanterns, beside the frozen fountain. Someone else had made the same secret dash! When the clock boomed twelve, Kiko added a fallen holly berry to the bow and hurried home glowing with nobody watching; if you spot the two boxes near Kiko’s feet, maybe one still has that midnight berry.
