🎨 How to color it

Color the sedan cherry red, the highway lanes charcoal gray, the exit sign bright blue with a white shield, and the tall roadside trees deep pine green. Use a fine-tip marker or sharp pencil for the many dashed lane lines, then fill the wider road curves with smooth, even strokes. Try making the big layered clouds fade from pale blue at the bottom to white at the top so the red car feels ready to zip forward.

Past the mile marker that hummed in the warm wind, Merrit whispered a new game: spot three arrows before anyone else did, then honk a tiny victory. He wanted to bring the best arrow back to the cruising pack before sunset. The wide highway smelled like hot rubber and clover, and everyone else rolled straight ahead, missing the sign that pointed to a shield-shaped service road.

Merrit took the exit alone. That was the price: no pack beside him, only the tick-tick of gravel under his tires and tall pines scratching the sky. The road curved behind the sign and opened onto a lookout where the highway below looked like silver ribbons. “You have to see this,” Merrit beeped, loud enough for the sound to bounce.

One by one, the others followed his call up the ramp, their headlights winking like they knew the secret now too. Merrit did not win his arrow game; he changed it. The best arrow was the one that brought everybody. If you trace the bold roadside arrow with your finger, can you hear Merrit’s tiny victory honk past the mile marker?
