🎨 How to color it

Color the rainbow bands red, orange, yellow, green, blue, and violet, then give the big shell peach stripes, the starfish coral, and the sea pale turquoise. Use chunky crayons for the broad rainbow arcs and water, and do not worry if little hands color over the tiny pebbles or wave lines. Try making the tide pool darker blue near the rocks so the coral starfish look like they are floating in a secret puddle.

The story behind this coloring page

Quill Shares the Giggle Shell — Before the gulls finished their squawk-squawk breakfast, Quill tucked his swirly shell under one arm and hurried to the tide pools. Read the full story →

Before the gulls finished their squawk-squawk breakfast, Quill tucked his swirly shell under one arm and hurried to the tide pools. He wanted to share the biggest giggle he had saved all week. The shell looked plain to everyone else, but when Quill shook it, it went plip, prrp, sploo! Tiny crabs tapped their claws, and the sea anemone wiggled like a wet mop.

The tide slipped lower, leaving shiny puddles around the rocks. Quill lifted the shell for one last silly sound. “Ready?” he whispered. Instead of a giggle, the shell puffed out six bright colors, and the huge rainbow over the water answered with a bendy belly-laugh. Even the sailboats bobbed. Next time you see the shell by the tide pool, can you hear its plip, prrp, sploo?
