🎨 How to color it

Color the humpback whale slate blue with a pale cream belly, make the tall kelp olive and sea green, and give the starfish soft coral-orange. Use sharp colored pencils for the thin kelp leaves and the whale’s throat grooves, then switch to broader strokes for the whale’s smooth back. Try a gentle blue-to-turquoise wash behind the bubbles so the white circles look like they are rising through clear water.

The story behind this coloring page

In the hush beyond the kelp garden, Tavi blew one silver bubble, then another, trying to make a trail that curved around every tall green frond. He had invented Bubble Path, a game where each bubble marked a safe turn home before the tide rubbed the sand smooth. The kelp leaves brushed his side like wet ribbons, and far off, the stone arches clicked and sighed in the current.

Tavi wanted the path to reach the little fish nursery before dusk, but the arches made the water dark and blue. He tucked his fins close. “Just one more bubble,” he whispered, and the bubble trembled out warm from his spout, round as a pearl. It rose beside the rocks, shining just enough for the smallest fish to follow.

When the tide turned, the fish slipped safely through the kelp, counting Tavi’s bubbles in soft flicks of silver. Ever since then, young whales leave bubble paths in kelp gardens when the water grows dim; and if you trace the bubbles upward, you may find the first brave turn in Tavi’s game.
