🎨 How to color it

Color the humpback in deep teal and soft gray, the curling waves in layered blues, and the crescent moon and stars in pale gold. Use sharp colored pencils for the whale’s thin swirls and speckles, then switch to longer side-strokes along the wide wave ribbons. Try fading the sky dots from silver near the moon to navy at the edges, as if the night is slowly deepening.

Under a quiet ceiling of salt-dark water, Etta pressed one flipper into the tide and invented a game: make one slow ripple, then wait until the sea finished carrying it away. The water smelled of cool stone and far rain. She counted by heartbeats, not numbers, while her ripple curled into another, then another, soft as ribbon.

She added a rule. Each new ripple had to be gentler than the last. Around her, tiny bubbles ticked upward. Long wave-lines loosened and turned, drawing paths she had not planned. Etta did not chase them. She hovered, patient, watching the dark surface brighten above her like a shell held to light.

Then the surprise arrived: the moon was playing too. Its pale crescent bent every ripple into a silver answer, and the stars pricked small dots between them, as if keeping score in the sky. “Your turn,” Etta whispered.

So she sent one final, feather-soft wave, and sea and sky folded it together. Next time you trace those curling paths, see if you can find the ripple Etta waited for under the quiet ceiling of salt-dark water.
