🎨 How to color it

Color the humpback’s back slate blue, its grooved throat pale cream, the bubbles icy aqua, and the seaweed deep teal. Use sharp colored pencils for the long throat lines and small bumps, then switch to light side-strokes for the curved sound waves. Try making the bubbles fade from turquoise to nearly white so the whale’s song feels like it is lifting them upward.

The story behind this coloring page

Under the quiet roof of the sea, Vera pressed her chin to a smooth shell ledge and hummed one note until it felt round as a pearl. She had given herself a challenge: carry that note past the three bubble columns without letting it wobble. The sound gardens beyond home shimmered with waving ribbons of weed, but they also tugged and tickled every song that passed.

Vera swam out anyway. The first bubbles popped cold against her nose. The second column stole half her breath with a fizzing rush. At the third, a cross-current bent her careful note into a funny, wavery loop. “Oh,” Vera whispered, and her cheeks warmed in the blue water. She could go back with nothing, or sing the wobbly note as it was.

So Vera opened wide and let it roll. The bent note spread into rings, soft and silver, and tiny shrimp clicked along with it from the weeds. A lanternfish blinked. A crab tapped stone. By the time Vera returned to her shell ledge, her one note had become many, and the joy inside her was too big to keep closed. Next time you see those round bubbles rising, can you find where Vera’s wobbly note turned pearl-bright?
