🎨 How to color it

Shade the dolphin in layered teal and pearl gray, give the lilies coral pink petals with golden stamens, and color the curling leaves in deep sea green. Use sharp pencils for the dolphin’s inner swirls and the narrow lily stems, turning the page as needed so each curve stays clean. For a mischievous finish, blend turquoise into violet inside the wave scrolls while leaving a few bubbles bright white like tiny pearls.

Every evening, Orrin buffed a bent silver spoon against his side until it flashed like a fish scale, then used its bowl to press tiny curls into the sand of the tide conservatory. He meant to build one perfect arch for the lily roots before the inspection crabs arrived, but the spoon had belonged to his first teacher, and he refused to use anything easier. One day it caught a sly sideways current and flicked a jet of silt straight into the crabs’ measuring sticks.

Because of that, the crabs chased him, clicking like castanets; because of that, Orrin dodged through the stems and accidentally carved a ribboning channel around the whole garden. The water began to hum through it, lifting pollen, bubbles, and one offended crab into a slow, elegant spin. “I made that,” Orrin said, trying not to laugh. Finally he set the spoon at the arch’s center, where the current held every handmade curl in place, flashing like a fish scale.
