Under the warm glass roof, Briar kept a clear key beneath one paw, though it opened nothing anyone could find. Each midnight it cooled like river stone and hummed against the tile, and curiosity tugged harder than sleep. She slipped past the orange trees, through a gap in the hedge, and into the damp service path where rain ticked on iron pipes and crushed mint scented her steps.
At the locked fern house, the key fit no latch, but a thorn caught it and snapped a whisker-fine crack across its handle. Briar almost carried the wounded thing home. Then the crack filled with green light, spelling a word she had never heard: RETURN. Inside, fern shadows leaned across her coat, matching leaves she thought were only markings. A small voice from the dark said, “Not every key opens away.”
Briar came back before dawn with no new door unlocked, but the vines along her side stirred whenever she passed the old hedge. The key, now kept behind her ear, no longer hummed to leave; it hummed softly under the warm glass roof.
