🎨 How to color it

Give the cat a smoky charcoal coat, the roses a deep burgundy, the thorny vines an old ivy green, and the cathedral arches a weathered stone gray. Use sharp colored pencils for the small skulls, leaf veins, and filigree around the eyes, building color from the outer curls toward the cat’s nose. For a stained-glass effect, shade the arched panels behind the ears in alternating dusky violet and muted teal while keeping the central face warmer.

Every evening, Nerissa crossed the nave by touching one paw to each rose-shadow cast through the high windows, making a private game of matching thorn to thorn before the bells cooled. She liked the hush afterward: candle smoke, damp stone, the faint iron scent of old rain in the gutters. Until one evening, the last shadow did not match any rose at all. It curved like a listening ear and pointed beneath the carved choir screen.

Because of that, Nerissa added a rule: follow what refuses to repeat. Because of that, she found a narrow arch breathing warm air and heard, behind it, the low purr of cats long gone, braided with the organ’s final note. “So this is where the quiet goes,” she whispered. At last she curled inside the hidden choir, and the strange shadow settled across her fur like a rose that had been waiting. Every evening, the bells cooled, and Nerissa touched one paw to each rose-shadow.
