🎨 How to color it

Give the cat a warm sandy beige coat, the rope-wrapped scratching post a natural jute tan, the ball toy a deeper caramel, and the potted plants soft sage green. Use sharp colored pencils for the crisscross rope bands and short fur strokes, then switch to smoother layers on the cat’s open chest and sides. Try a pale teal wall behind the plants so the tan rope and curious eyes feel extra bright.

Every morning, before the plant studio smelled of wet soil and minty leaves, Pippa pressed one paw to the tall rope post and counted the ridges: scratch, pause, scratch. She wanted to make a toy with her own paws, not chase the same old feather until its stem went soft. She tugged loose strands from the post’s bottom coil, rolling them into a small, lumpy moon.

Until one day, her claw clicked on wood where rope should have been. Because of that, she nosed the base seam and found a flat paper packet tucked where no broom could reach. Because of that, she shook out three silver beads and a note smelling faintly of cedar: FOR THE CAT WHO CAN BRAID.

Pippa worked slowly, whiskers trembling in the quiet light, twisting strand over strand around the beads until the toy purred with a tiny hush-rattle. “I made you,” she whispered. At last she set her braided ball beside the post, proud as sunrise, and if you trace the coils, you may find where the morning began: scratch, pause, scratch.
