🎨 How to color it

Color the kitten’s raincoat sunny yellow, the cloud-pattern umbrella sky blue with white puffs, the boots cherry red, and the puddle pale aqua. Use sharp colored pencils for the umbrella’s tiny raindrops, coat buttons, boot swirls, and flower petals, then fill the bigger raincoat panels with smooth strokes. Try making the smiling rain cloud lavender-gray so the bright yellow coat feels like a little lantern in the shower.

The story behind this coloring page

Why Puddles Keep Ripples — Under the dripping bean arch, Vesper tapped each flat stone with her boot and whispered the count into her sleeve. Read the full story →

Under the dripping bean arch, Vesper tapped each flat stone with her boot and whispered the count into her sleeve. She wanted to reach fifty before the rain blurred the path, but every plip made the puddles shiver and steal the stone edges. Hush, friend—here’s the secret part: Vesper did not stomp. She stood with her umbrella low, smelling wet leaves and rubber boots, and waited.

A puddle beside the daisies cleared its throat with a tiny glub. “Count between the drops,” it said. Vesper held her breath. Plip... one stone appeared. Plip... two. The spaces between raindrops were small as whisker-tips, but she caught them, one by one, until the whole path shone back at her.

When she reached fifty, she lifted one boot to celebrate. The puddle begged, “One splash, please, so I remember.” Vesper gave the gentlest splash—pat!—and rings ran outward like silver bracelets. Ever since, puddles keep ripples for patient counters; next time you see those rings around a boot, you’ll know Vesper is still counting between the drops.
