Under the cool smell of chimney smoke, Vesper placed one paw on the fence rail and listened to the wood tick softly in the night. He wanted to walk all the way past the last post, farther than his whiskers had ever measured, where the rooftops looked like folded paper boats. The moon made every nail head silver. Step, pause. Step, breathe.
The fence carried him along with small creaks and smooth places worn by rain. Stars pricked the sky above the roof, and Vesper’s tail curled high to keep his balance. At the middle post, he heard a sound that was not a creak at all: ting, ting, ting, like a spoon touching a teacup. “Hello?” he whispered.
From a knothole no one ever checked, a round seed of moonlight rolled out and rested against his paw. Inside it, tiny sparks turned like sleeping fireflies. Vesper understood then that the fence had not been daring him away from home; it had been saving a first lantern for his first far walk. He nudged the glow ahead and followed, step, pause, step, breathe—can you find the place where the hidden moon might have been waiting?
