🎨 How to color it

Try a cherry-red body for the sports car, black-and-white squares on the waving flag, silver-gray guardrails, and bright blue letters on the FINISH banner. Use sharp colored pencils for the flag grids, tire rings, and grandstand railings, then switch to broader marker strokes for the car’s smooth hood and track lanes. Add pale yellow speed streaks behind the car so the red paint feels even faster against the cool gray track.

The story behind this coloring page

Under the grandstand steps, Juno heard it again: tik-tik, tik-tik, like a pebble trapped in a tin cup. She had promised the pit chief she would find the rattle before the sunset race, because every driver kept glancing up at the finish line instead of the curve. The air smelled like hot rubber and lemonade, and the crowd’s shoes drummed overhead. Nobody checked the flag. Why would they? It only waved.

Juno climbed the ladder beside the finish banner when the engines began to roar. The huge checkered flag snapped in the wind, black square, white square, black square, hiding and showing its seams. There, in the thick bottom hem, her fingers found a tiny stitched pocket. Inside was a brass whistle, warm from the sun. “You were calling the cars,” she whispered.

She blew one quick note just as the lead car flashed past. The flag whipped forward, the drivers understood, and ever since, checkered flags have carried a secret place for the finishing signal. If you listen with your eyes, can you spot where Juno’s hidden pocket might be?
