Under the soft buzz of the winner lights, Rafi patted the empty pocket inside his glove. The tiny cloth star his aunt had sewn for his first pedal-kart race was gone, and the silver cup could wait until he found it.
He rolled out of the warm winner’s lane and back along the cooling track. The tires whispered over rubbery black marks. Near turn three, a breeze lifted paper confetti against his visor, and Rafi scraped his knee climbing down to check the rumble strip. No star. Only the smell of hot pavement and popcorn drifting from the quiet stands.
At last, beneath his own seat, his fingers brushed something soft. The charm had been there the whole time, tucked beside a loose bolt that needed tightening. “You came with me,” Rafi whispered, laughing gently. He drove back slower than before, hearing every clap, every small voice, every familiar hum of the car. If you peek at the driver waving under the big sign, can you tell which pocket holds the little cloth star?
