Behind the practice cones, where rubber smelled warm in the sun, Bix kept his wheels wiggling. He wanted the next whistle so badly that his number 3 door nearly buzzed. “Psst,” he told the smallest cone, “I can hear fast coming.” But the whistle did not blow. A tiny green turtle shuffled from under the checkered curb, carrying a chalk line on his shell.
“Secret job,” the turtle whispered. “The last square is crooked.” Bix rolled out of his cozy starting spot and nudged the chalk box along, inch by inch. Dust tickled his tires. He missed one whole practice run, and his engine made a quiet grumble. At last the turtle tapped the finished line. Tweet! The whistle sang. Bix came back slower than he left, with chalk on one tire and the shiniest start of all. If you peek at the track, can you spot where patience left its little marks?
