🎨 How to color it

Give the puppy honey-brown patches, the wooden fence a soft cedar tan, the bushes leafy green, and the scattered maple leaves rusty orange. Use sharp colored pencils for the fence’s thin wood-grain lines and leaf veins, then switch to broader strokes for the puppy’s back and the path. Try making one leaf near the puppy’s nose a bright golden yellow, like the special piece it has just discovered.

Under the porch step, where the boards smelled like sun-warmed dust, Juniper invented a game called Leaf-Whisper. She would sniff one leaf, hear its crinkle, and guess where the breeze had carried it. The best leaf, a curled golden one, skittered beyond the step and tapped the side gate: tik, tik.

Juniper put one paw onto the cool path. Then another. Dry grass brushed her ankles, and the fence made long, quiet stripes of shade. A rake leaned nearby with one tooth missing, looking like it might scrape the sky. Juniper swallowed. “Just to the yellow leaf,” she whispered.

The leaf slid under a bush, and Juniper had to squeeze past prickly twigs that tugged one soft ear. She paid with a burr in her fur and a sneeze full of peppery leaf dust. But beneath the bush was a tiny clay bird, cracked and muddy, with rainwater shining in its cup-shaped back. Juniper nosed it home to the porch, then brought the golden leaf too. Next time you spot her low to the path, can you tell which leaf first went tik, tik?
