Every afternoon, when the ferry horn moaned across the harbor, Vera trotted to the waiting room and claimed the warm oval of rug where sunlight spilled through the high window. The floor smelled of wet boots, rope, and salt, and the rug’s braided bumps pressed little moons into her paws. She would sit very still, guarding that golden patch until her person’s boat came in.
Until one day, a tiny sneeze came from behind the ticket bench. Vera found a striped kitten, whiskers damp with fog, tucked beside a cold metal leg. Because of that, Vera nudged her favorite place with her nose. Because of that, the kitten stepped onto the rug, trembling less with every breath. Vera sat at the edge, where the light only touched one ear.
At last the ferry bell rang, bright as a dropped spoon, and Vera’s person hurried in without seeing the trade. The kitten leaned against Vera, warm now, purring like a hidden engine. If you study the rug’s braided loops, you may spot the sunny place Vera gave away when the ferry horn moaned across the harbor.
