Before the first birds, Rina padded through the blossom lantern grove with a brass key under her tongue. She wanted to wind the round dawn lamp before its last gold breath went out. The air smelled of wet bark and sweet petals, but the lamp only made a dry tik-tik-tik.
From inside a curled cloud above the branch, someone sneezed silver sparks. A tiny cloud-sprite tumbled down, shivering. “I borrowed the lamp’s warm middle,” it whispered, “to thaw my rain.” Rina looked at her bright festival bow, stitched with petal shapes. No keeper watched. No bell rang. She untied one glowing thread and tucked it through the sprite’s chilly cloud.
The cloud warmed, the lamp hummed, and pink light slid over every branch. Ever since then, dawn lanterns wear flower patterns, because one cat gave them a ribbon’s secret fire. If you find the lantern beside Rina’s bow, can you spot where the first glow might be hiding?
