🎨 How to color it

Try warm orange-brown tabby stripes for the kitten, teal eyes, soft gray shadows inside the ears, and peacock blue with golden yellow on the dangling feathers. Use sharp colored pencils for the many fur tufts and feather barbs, coloring in the direction each line points so the coat and plumes stay lively. For a playful twist, make the pet bowl a cool mint green so the warm kitten and bright feathers pop against it.

The story behind this coloring page

Nico’s Three-Tap Dare — Every day after breakfast, Nico set himself the Three-Tap Dare. Read the full story →

Every day after breakfast, Nico set himself the Three-Tap Dare. He would spring from the rubber mat, pat the feather wand once, twice, three times, and land without bumping the water bowl. The playroom smelled like kibble dust and clean towels, and the wand made a brisk fffft-ffft above his ears. “Three clean taps,” he whispered, tail snapping like a flag.

Until one windy afternoon, the latch on the supply cupboard clicked open. Because of that, a sack of kitten food slumped over and spilled shiny brown moons across the floor. Because of THAT, Nico heard tiny scratching from the cardboard carrier under the bench: the new runt, too shy to come out when people watched. Nico’s dare changed at once. He hooked the feather string, batted it hard, and dragged a trail of kibble moons behind the dancing plumes.

The runt crept out and ate while the volunteers laughed at the “silly” kitten attacking his toy. Nico gave the wand three final taps, loud as drumbeats, then sat tall and looked innocent. Next time you spot his raised paw and those dangling feathers, see if you can guess where the secret trail began.
