🎨 How to color it

Try smoky gray for the cat’s outer face, jade green for the almond eyes, dusty rose for the petal shapes, and soft sage for the leafy background vines. Use sharp colored pencils and color the smallest curls, dots, and feather bands first so your hand does not smear work across the cat’s broad cheeks. For a quiet glow, shade the patterns around each eye a little darker than the rest of the face, as if curiosity is gathering there.

Under the glass roof of the old vine conservatory, Sable pressed one paw to the cool tile and invented a game: ask a question, then follow whatever shape the question made. “Why does rain smell green?” she whispered. A fern uncrolled. “Why do moths tap lamps?” A tendril curled twice. Soon her curiosity slipped ahead of her like a ribbon through warm leaf-scented air, and every new why made another line appear in the dust.

By dusk, Sable had asked so many questions that the vines could not hold them all. They climbed the window frames, looped around the watering cans, and drifted toward her whiskers, light as spider silk. She sat very still while the lines settled across her brow, around her eyes, inside her ears, and along her cheeks, each curl saving a question she was not done loving.

Ever since, cats have carried secret wandering patterns in their faces; stare softly, and curiosity may run away with you too, under the glass roof where Sable pressed one paw to the cool tile.
