Every day, Zeno hammered driftwood sticks into the sand and made new rules for his game, Captain’s Dare. Tap the shell, leap the puddle, salute the palm—whoever reached the flag without smudging a pawprint won a pebble coin. The little atoll smelled of salt and warm rope, and Zeno’s paws buzzed with pride each time his handmade course grew trickier.
Until one day, the tide rushed in with a shhh-BOOM and swallowed his first three markers. Because of that, Zeno dragged his open chest higher and filled it with shells for stepping-stones. Because of that, the silver shells flashed like arrows, leading him past waving grass to the one dry spot by the flagpole. “My game still works!” he yowled.
