Rain tapped tip-tip on the puddle walk, and Bren kept one boot on the dry stone. His gate key glittered beside the biggest puddle, too far to reach, while the wet air smelled like mud and cold leaves.
Then an old umbrella opened by itself with a soft fwump. “Step under,” it whispered. Bren swallowed, held the curved handle, and took one small splash. Above him, a pale arch slid out of the rain, looking for a place to sit.
Bren lifted the umbrella high. The arch tucked its colors between the clouds and the umbrella ribs, snug as ribbon in a drawer. Ever since, umbrellas have remembered the shape of rainbows. Next time you see those curved umbrella panels, can you find where Bren helped the colors rest?
