🎨 How to color it

Color the apples ruby red, the tree trunk warm tan, the leafy crown in two fresh greens, and the basket golden brown. Use sharp colored pencils for the many small leaves and blossoms, then switch to markers for the broad trunk and rolling field bands. Try a pale blue sky that fades lighter around the spiky sun, so the red apples stand out like tiny lanterns.

Under the old apple tree, Tessa slipped three windfalls into her basket and winced when the handle snapped with a dry crack. The basket had been her first real make: crooked sides, lumpy knots, and all. She tucked the broken handle under her arm and followed the curving path past the fence, where the field smelled of warm grass and dusty flowers.

At the creek ditch, reeds whispered shh-shh against her knees. Tessa cut six long ones with her pocketknife, but one thorny bramble snagged her sleeve and left a red thread waving behind her. “Fair trade,” she told the bramble softly. Back beneath the apple branches, she soaked the reeds in her water cup, bent them over her thumb, and wove them through the basket’s rim—over, under, pull snug.

By sunset, the new handle arched higher than the old one. It did not match, and that made her smile. She filled the basket with apples, lifted it with both hands, and felt the small, sturdy weight of something she had mended herself. If you spot that basket under the tree, keep its secret: every crooked strip is holding up the day she made it stronger.
