🎨 How to color it

Give the treehouse warm cedar-brown boards, the leafy canopy two greens, the star flag bright red, and the birds soft sky blue. Use sharp colored pencils for the roof shingles, rope railings, ladders, and tiny window panes, then switch to broader strokes for the trunk and bushes. Try a sunrise glow behind the treetop so the telescope, flag, and flying birds feel touched by first light.

Before the park gates clinked open, Nola carried a tin cup of warm cocoa up the long ladder, one rung at a time. The bark smelled damp and peppery after night rain, and the treehouse boards gave soft creaks under her sneakers. She wanted to look through the brass telescope before anyone else arrived, just once, while the clouds were still pink at the edges.

On the deck, the little star flag snapped—tap, tap, tap—and the hanging lantern chimed against its hook. Nola set her cup beside the railing and leaned toward the telescope. A white bird landed on the roof peak and tilted its head as if listening. Then another settled near the bucket, and another on the rope rail. “Are you waiting for me?” Nola whispered.

The first bird dropped a pale leaf into the telescope’s open end. Nola laughed, then looked through. The leaf’s tiny veins lined up with the winding path, the birdhouse, the bushes, even the tire swing below. It was not a spyglass at all that morning; it was a map reader for travelers with wings. Nola climbed onto the deck’s sunniest board, small courage fizzing like cocoa bubbles, and held the telescope steady until the birds lifted off. If you follow the winding path with your eyes, you may find where the leaf-map pointed before the park gates clinked open.
