Each dawn before the gulls woke, Kaido twisted sea-grass cords and fitted shell chips into a tide compass he was building with his own claws. One lumpy clay bead sat in the middle, ugly as a potato, but it was the first piece he had shaped himself, warm from his breath and stamped with his smallest talon.
Every day, he tested the compass in the reef channel, listening to click-click shells and smelling salt on the spray—until one day black wind rolled down and split the current in two. Because of that, fishing boats spun toward the rocks. Because of that, Kaido’s compass shook apart, leaving only the clay bead blazing in his claws. “Hold, little spark!” he shouted, diving through foam.
At last, Kaido pressed the bead into the wave’s roaring heart. Fire met water with a hiss like a thousand kettles, and the currents snapped back into one shining road. Later, every sailor praised the bright pearl, but Kaido touched the tiny talon mark and grinned. If you trace the waves with your eyes, can you find where his first lumpy bead became storm-fire?
