At the ring of picnic stones, Tamsin balanced apples, leaves, and berry bunches in her basket and whispered the rules of her new game: if Brindle sniffed a fruit, she would raise the matching flag color before lunch. The meadow smelled of crushed clover and warm dust. Brindle only blinked at the basket, his saddle tassels still. Then the empty flagpole beyond the path gave one soft clink, though no wind touched it.
Tamsin stepped out past the stones, boots scraping grit, and crossed to the pole. A thorn nicked her sleeve, and three berries tumbled from the basket into the grass. When she untied the flag, she found tiny stitched marks hidden along the hem: apple, berry, leaf—and a fourth mark shaped like a door. “Brindle, this game has another rule,” she called.
She tied the flag high and brought the basket back. Brindle lowered his nose, not to choose, but to puff a warm cinnamon breath over every fruit at once. Across the meadow, shed doors creaked open and shy field sprites peeked out, hungry and laughing. Tamsin’s feast was too big to keep. Next time you spot the little flag behind them, see if you can guess which color called the whole valley to the ring of picnic stones.
