🎨 How to color it

Color the lion’s coat tawny gold, his heavy mane deep chestnut, the chain-link fence cool silver, and the tree leaves olive green. Use sharp colored pencils for the crisscross fence and mane strands, then switch to broader strokes for the lion’s body, rocks, and open ground. Add a pale blue shadow behind the fence so the warm lion stands out beneath the tree.

Every morning, before the city buses sighed awake, Oren touched the plain brass tag on his collar to the cool fence post. Tap. Listen. Tap. Listen. The tag had belonged to his mother, and its tiny dent caught the first light like a hidden star. He wanted to keep it safe and silent, away from teeth, claws, and careless rain.

Until one day, a storm rolled over the zoo with a smell of wet leaves and iron. Wind snapped a small service gate loose, and a keeper’s cart rattled downhill with two frightened peacocks inside. Because of that, the peacocks cried so sharply that the young gazelles bolted. Because of that, the bent gate swung wider, creak by creak, toward the busy path beyond the fence.

Oren stepped to the post where he always tapped, but this time he pressed the brass tag into the narrow latch hole. Click. The little gate held. His paws trembled in the muddy grass, yet he stayed until the keeper came running. “Good old key,” she whispered. Oren looked at the dent shining against his chest; next time you see his quiet face by the fence, can you spot the small courage of tap, listen, tap?
