Every evening, Bram patched torn wing-kites for the cave’s squeaky flight games, saving the oddest scraps in a walnut shell. He wanted to build a tiny moon lantern from his favorite thing: a smooth white coat button that had rolled in with the rain and clicked like a tooth when tapped.
One damp night, the real moon hid behind storm clouds, and the batlings groaned because the zigzag race markers vanished. Bram tied thread through his button, rubbed it with glow-moss, and held it high. Because of that, every bat tried to “improve” it with pebble beads, fern fuzz, and one very offended beetle shell. Because of that, the lantern grew lopsided, sparkly, and too heavy, tugging Bram into a ridiculous loop-de-loop.
“Mine needs fewer beetles!” Bram squeaked, laughing. At last he snipped away the extras and hung the button moon where the cave opened to the stars. The race began under his handmade glow, and if you spot the crescent in the cavern, imagine Bram’s little button clicking like a tooth.
