🎨 How to color it

Color the witch’s hat deep violet, her patched dress moss green, the cauldron iron gray, and the hanging herbs sage and goldenrod. Use sharp colored pencils for the tiny patches, book spines, potion bottles, and spiderweb, then switch to smoother marker fills on the cauldron and wide wooden shelves. Try making the rising bubbles pale blue near the pot and lavender higher up, as if the spell is changing as it floats.

Under the thatch where dried mint clicked softly in the draft, Elspeth tapped her spoon on the cauldron and invented a secret game: every bubble had to be named before it popped. “Sloop is for socks, Plink is for pins,” she whispered, and the green steam smelled like apples and rain. For the last bubble, she needed a moonseed from the cellar shelf. The cellar door breathed cold dust through its keyhole.

Elspeth stepped down anyway, one stair at a time. Her candle hissed. Something brushed her ankle—only a broom straw, but she paid the dark a tiny price: one squeak she wished she had kept. Behind the potato sack, a moonseed glimmered like a pearl in flour. “Got you,” she breathed, though her hand shook.

Back at the cauldron, she dropped it in. The bubbles rose round and bright, each carrying a name she had not given them yet: Step, Squeak, Still, Brave. Next time you spot the bubbles over her pot, keep the secret—one of them may be saving your name.
