🎨 How to color it

Color the manger straw golden yellow, Mary’s robe soft blue, Joseph’s cloak warm brown, and the cow and donkey in gentle tans and grays. Use sharp colored pencils for the roof’s many straw lines and the wooden beams, then switch to broader strokes for the hills and open sky. Try making the large star bright gold with pale yellow rays, so its light seems to spill over the stable roof.

The story behind this coloring page

Selah Shares the Star — On the quiet hill above Bethlehem, Selah pressed a warm pebble into her palm and invented a game called Pass the Gladness. Read the full story →

On the quiet hill above Bethlehem, Selah pressed a warm pebble into her palm and invented a game called Pass the Gladness. Whoever held the pebble had to whisper one happy thing and point to where it should travel next. The sheep’s wool smelled like rain and dust, and the night was so still that even the bells on the flock only said tink, tink.

Selah wanted the joy in her chest to go farther than the sheepfold, but the hill was dark, and her little brother kept saying, “No one can follow a whisper.” Then a soft brightness trembled over the town. Selah pointed with the pebble, and the light answered by stretching one clear ray toward a low stable. She whispered, “A baby,” and another ray opened toward the road, then another toward the fields, then another toward roofs sleeping in blue shadow.

By the time Selah reached the straw-sweet stable, the star had learned her game. Its points aimed everywhere joy needed to go: to travelers, animals, shepherds, and anyone awake enough to wonder. Ever since that night, the Christmas star has worn many points, because gladness that big must be shared; can you find each ray still playing Pass the Gladness above Bethlehem?
