Under the soft pine hush, Kovo tucked his flippers into his scarf and invented Mitten Signal. Red meant “come play,” blue meant “snow snack,” and yellow meant “secret.” He wanted to hang three mittens between the posts before Bear woke from his snowy sit-down nap.
Kovo waddled past the lumpy drifts. Squeak, squeak went the snow. A small shiver came from behind the tallest pine, where someone had left a carrot nose in the frost. Kovo gave up his best warm mitten and clipped it to the line. “That one means help,” he whispered.
When Bear opened his eyes, the snowman stood between them, smiling with Kovo’s mitten tucked close like a tiny heart. Nobody had seen Kovo share it, except maybe the clouds. Next time you spot the mitten line, can you guess which color still means secret?
