🎨 How to color it

Color the round float in tangerine orange and lemon yellow, the pool water in bright aqua, the tropical leaves in deep palm green, and the striped flip-flops in coral and white. Use smooth marker strokes for the broad water area, then switch to a sharp pencil for the float’s narrow sections and the thin leaf veins. Try making the ripples darkest near the float and lighter as they spread toward the deck, like August sunlight is wobbling across the pool.

The pool in the courtyard made a soft glug-glug under the August sun, and Juniper crouched at the edge with her stopwatch ready. She wanted to time the exact moment a ripple reached the round float in the middle. Every few minutes, a leaf dropped, a breeze nudged the water, or someone’s sandal squeaked on the warm tiles, and Juniper whispered, “Not yet,” while the smell of sunscreen and wet stone shimmered around her.

She waited through three palm shadows sliding across the deck. The float turned lazily, showing its bright slices one by one. Then a tiny green beetle landed on Juniper’s flip-flop, carrying a curled scrap of paper no bigger than a fingernail. It tapped the rubber strap twice, as if knocking on a door. Juniper uncurled the paper and found a dot, a spiral, and one word: WAIT.

So she did. The beetle hopped to the pool rim. A single silver bubble rose from below, popped, and sent one perfect ring outward—straight to the float, then back again, as if the water had answered. Juniper clicked her stopwatch and laughed so loudly the leaves shook. If you follow the ripples next time, can you spot where the beetle’s secret knock began?
