🎨 How to color it

Color the snapdragon blossoms coral pink, the hovering bee golden yellow with smoky gray wings, and the daisies white with sunny centers. Use sharp colored pencils for the small leaves and the bee’s wing veins, then switch to smoother strokes on the larger ruffled petals. Try shading each snapdragon throat a deeper rose so the flowers look like tiny open mouths whispering in the meadow.

Under the warm tick-tick of grasshoppers, Nico pressed his elbows into the wildflower verge and invented a game called Snapdragon Statue. The rules were simple: choose one ruffled flower mouth, wait without laughing, and count how long it stayed “closed.” A daisy brushed his cheek with a powdery smell, a grass blade poked his ear, and the snapdragon tower stood still as a very fancy guard.

Nico waited through one ant parade, two drifting seeds, and three itches on his nose. “I am a rock,” he whispered, which made him feel less like a rock at once. Then a bee zipped in, fuzzy and loud, and hovered beside the blossoms without landing. It faced Nico as if it were the referee.

The twist was not that the bee wanted nectar. The bee was playing too. Each time Nico blinked, the bee bobbed once, twice, three times, keeping score in midair like a tiny striped judge. Nico blinked on purpose—slowly, grandly—and the bee waggled so hard it nearly tumbled. When you find the hovering bee beside the snapdragon, ask who is winning the waiting game now.
